Windows allows you to associate your various file types to open in the software you want it to. For instance if you are in a folder and you click on a file with a (.doc) extension it most likely opens in Word. The same thing happens with (.xls) extension which will open in Excel.
SVG files can be opened by many products. So depending on what software product you are using you may associate them to open in Adobe Illustrator, Inkscape, Sure Cuts Alot, or Internet Explorer. I associate my svg files with Internet Explorer. When you use Inkscape it automatically associates them with IE (Internet Explorer) and if you want to, you can change them to open in Inkscape. If you want to learn how to associate your file types to open with a specific software product then scroll down to the bottom of the screen.
How to open my files:
If your file type (.svg) is associated with IE then:
You can click on the link and the file will open in Internet Explorer. Then click on the "File" menu at the top of the screen and then click on "Edit in Inkscape" and it will then open up in Inkscape.
If your file type (.svg) is associated with Inkscape then:
1) Highlight the link with your mouse and then perform a right mouse click and then select from the popup menu "Save Target as" and then the "Save as" Window displays
2) In the "Save In" list box you can select the folder you want it to be saved in
3) At the bottom of the screen the "file name" will default to the one I gave it and you can keep that or rename it to what you want to call it
4) and then the "Save as type" will default to svg and you can keep that or choose something else
5) and then all you do is click on "save" button. It will then download it to the folder you told it to
6) and then you can click on open and it will open in Inkscape.
Associate File types: If you have windows XP: 1)On your desktop click on the "start button" 2) and then click on "Control Panel" and then select the "file options" 3) Then click on the 'file type' tab 4) and then in the registered file types window scroll down in the window searching for the svg extension. Once you find it then click on the svg extension and then select it 5) Then click on the "change" button and then a window will display called "opens with" and it will display the recommended programs you should use to open svg files. If you have sure cuts alot on your computer you should see that under the recommended files. If you have inkscape you should see that as well. To open in inkscape select Inkscape. To open in Sure Cuts Alot choose sure cuts alot. I associate my files with Internet explorer so when you click on my files on my blog it will open in an internet explorer window. That is why you need to follow the directions above to open my files.
